Former Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse reveals just how close he was to having foot amputated when he suffered double leg break against Blackburn

Djibril Cisse says he could have lost foot following a horrific injury while playing for Liverpool in 2004 if it were not for the swift actions of the medical team.

The striker suffered the double fracture against Blackburn not long after signing for the club when his boot got caught in the turf.

If quick action had not been taken by the medical staff then there was a real risk his leg would have been amputated.

He told Jim White on talkSPORT: “I had a fracture and the bone snapped and came on top of the other. My blood circulation was not working and reaching my foot.

“The doctor said to me ‘I’m going to have to reduce the fracture’. I didn’t know what he was talking about so I just said ‘do what you’ve got to do’. He counted to three and pulled my leg.

“Everything went fine and I think some months after I said ‘why did you do this?’. He said ‘your blood circulation at your foot was irrigated, I don’t know if this is the right word. He said after 30 minutes to an hour it would have to be amputated’. So thanks to the doc.”

Despite breaking his fibula and tibia he made a remarkable recovery and was able to return later on that season and helped Liverpool win the Champions League.

He came on in the final against AC Milan and scored in the penalty shootout.

Cisse added: “I had just signed for Liverpool (when it happened).

“I started the season well and scored in the first game against Tottenham. Then in October I broke my leg.

“I managed to come back just before the end and play just before the Champions League final. I was really happy with that.”

His time at Liverpool was relatively short but helped the club win the FA Cup the following season before joining Marseille on loan in 2006 and moved to the French club permanently soon after.
