UFC legend Chael Sonnen takes aim at Jon Jones with series of personal attacks on Twitter with drink-driving, drug and prison references

In Chael Sonnen, Jon Jones picked the wrong man to engage in a war of words.

Sonnen, who lost to Jones in a short-notice light heavyweight title fight in 2013, retired from mixed martial arts in 2019 and had recently spoken glowingly about Jones, calling him the greatest ever at the weekend.

“For him to pay tribute to Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali earlier was a very nice thing for him to do, but the reality is that Jon Jones could beat Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali in the same day,” Sonnen said.

Sonnen concluded by saying: “I don’t think he understands how good he is. When he says he wants to be the best ever, Jon, newsflash buddy, you are the best.”

While no one would dispute Jones’ ability, his character has come into question countless times over the years for his trouble with the law.

One of the first things that spring to mind for many fans when they think of Jones is drugs, and drink driving isn’t far behind that.

Jones saw that Sonnen had spoken about him on YouTube and without mentioning him by name, tweeted: “Who is this? Has been with now man boobs making money off of YouTube getting hit talking about Jon Jones?”

When everyone instantly realised it was Sonnen, he then posted: “That took a whole 25 seconds for you guys to figure out, impressive.”

Sonnen, one of the best trash-talkers in years gone by, wouldn’t miss this opportunity and began by referencing his various arrests.

Not mentioning Jones’ name, he wrote: “Guy. You’re the only fighter in UFC history w/more Mug Shots than Al Capone,” before adding “More wrecks than Evel Knievel,” a subtle dig at his driving discretions.

The insults carried on in the same vein with one jab wondering: “On that rare occasion when a fan asks for a pic-do you give them the side-view out of habit?”

The killer blow landed when Sonnen said: “If you ever DROVE SOBER the networks would cover it LIVE w/HELICOPTERS.”

Sonnen ended by claiming Jones ‘ratted’ to police in drug cases, but the current light heavyweight champion hasn’t replied to any of the tweets as of yet.

Jones, commonly regarded as the greatest in his weight class ever, is looking to step up to heavyweight and face the very powerful Francis Ngannou in the near future.
