Gabriel Benitez may forced to reconsider his move up to the 155lbs division after his UFC debut at lightweight ended in a gruesome injury.

Benitez, who has spent his career fighting at featherweight made the step up to face Omar Antonio Morales during the UFC Fight Night prelims from Jacksonville, Florida on Wednesday night.

The two men spent the entirety of the contest kickboxing – with just one takedown attempt across three gruelling rounds.

Southpaw Benitez sought to attack the body and lead leg of his naturally bigger opponent, but it was clear Morales had done his homework and knew when the kicks were coming.

As he continued to check strike after strike, the laceration on his shin began to deepen at an alarming rate.

Having opened up during the first round, Benitez’s left leg soon turned into a stream of claret and sweat as commentators Daniel Cormier, Jon Anik and Paul Felder winced with every strike.

With the fight going to a decision, fans caught a first-hand glimpse of the injury and it is fair to say the end result was stomach-churning even for the most resolute individual.

Benitez was initially scheduled to face Manchester’s very own Lerone Murphy at UFC London, but the fight was cancelled owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite the fight cancellation, Murphy has continued to train and eat healthily during the lockdown and could well welcome veteran Benitez back to 145lbs once his leg heals.
