Why Edge refused WWE’s call to break The Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak in 2008

For the first time ever, The Undertaker is opening up to the world.

While the WWE legend is one of the biggest names in the world of professional wrestling, the man behind the character – Mark Callaway – has rarely spoken before.

He has protected his gimmick with all his might during his 30 years in the business, but now, his Last Ride series on the WWE Network is allowing fans to see him behind the scenes.

As part of the series, his wife and former WWE diva Michelle McCool, plays a central role in helping the audience understand what her husband has gone through with all the injuries and surgeries.

The first episode of the series shows Undertaker preparing to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 33, a match he believed would be his last at the time.

At the 2017 event, Reigns became only the second man to defeat ‘Taker, with Brock Lesnar being was the first – at WrestleMania 30 – ending an unbeaten run that had notched 21 victories.

In a recent interview, McCool actually opened up about another man WWE had pitched to break the streak, but he refused.

“Actually I remember at WrestleMania [24] versus Edge they talked about Edge breaking the streak,” she told the New York Post.

“It was Edge that was actually like, ‘That makes zero sense. I don’t want to do that. Why would I do that? The fans already love him. What’s it gonna do for Edge?’

“It was Edge that went to bat for the streak. I know they had talked about it prior to the match with Brock, but you know it happened.

“It’s fine, it’s not like it’s an end-all, be-all for Mark by any stretch of the imagination.”

Of course, the Rated-R superstar was spot on. It wouldn’t help someone like him grow beyond what he already was whereas a talent like Reigns getting a win over the Deadman on the Grandest Stage of Them All is significant.

Lesnar was just the type of high profile fighter worthy of the accolade, too, and WWE had grander title plans for him that would shape the next five years of the company, maybe more.

Either way, The Undertaker isn’t done yet and his last outing was a victory over AJ Styles at WrestleMania 36 last month.
