Darren Bent on who is ‘best player to ever play in England’ as he names all-time Premier League XI

Many see the Premier League as the best league in the world so inevitably it will have attracted some of the game’s best players.

But who are the best stars to have graced the English top flight since the 1992/93 season?

talkSPORT.com quizzed former Premier League striker Darren Bent, who played for the likes of Tottenham and Aston Villa, to see who makes his all-time Premier League XI.

There’s a surprise selection at right-back, with Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold, 21, being picked ahead of the likes of Gary Neville.

Below you can see who else makes Bent’s team, including who he feels is the best player to ever play in the country…

Peter Schmeichel (Goalkeeper)

He was so dominant at United, such a physical presence. Made great saves, won Premier League trophies and won the Champions League.

I thought about David Seaman, he was close. There’s also Ederson and Alisson, who are part of this new breed of goalkeepers who can play with their feet but I’ve gone for Schmeichel.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Right-back)

People will say Gary Neville and I get it. He has a lot of Premier League games and trophies at Man United but I’ve never seen a right-back with the distribution of Trent.

I know defensively you might worry about him but I haven’t seen someone so young with such ability with his technique, his dead balls, his crossing, his passing. He’s got absolutely everything.

Rio Ferdinand (Centre-back)

He’s an absolute Rolls Royce of a footballer. He was so hard to play against, he read the game really well. He could play out from the back and had two good feet.

He was hard to play against but a real pleasure to play with at England.

When I played against him I might have thought about running into the channel but before I’ve turned to do that, he’s already there!

Vincent Kompany (Centre-back)

This was a tough one because I was thinking about Virgil van Dijk. In this situation, longevity has picked Kompany.

Right now, Van Dijk is one of the most dominant centre-backs in football but there was a period in Kompany’s career where he was that dominant. He was one of the best in the world.

Kompany was so hard to play against, you couldn’t get round him. And we see how difficult it’s been for Manchester City in defence this season now that he’s not there.

Ashley Cole (Left-back)

I think he’s the best left-back this country has ever seen. I loved how he was at Arsenal being an Arsenal fan but you have to say he achieved more at Chelsea.

Me and my dad have this argument all the time as he’s a Chelsea fan. But I’d say everything he learned at Arsenal, he took to Chelsea. He was great at both teams.

Patrick Vieira (Defensive midfield)

I loved everything about Vieira. Leader, captain, aggressive, could score goals, could break up play, could put a tackle in.

He was a big physical presence and was so dominant on the pitch. You knew that if he was in your team you had a real chance of winning.

Paul Scholes (Midfield)

There were other names like Kevin De Bruyne and Steven Gerrard but I’m going to put Scholes in there.

He was absolutely sensational, particularly his passing. He always seem to have two yards of space, every time I went to shut him down I couldn’t get near him. His touch was that good.

Frank Lampard (Midfield)

You can’t score that many goals from midfield and not get put in an all-time Premier League XI. 177 Premier League goals from midfield is insane.

He’s another one who’s been appreciated more since he left the game. He’s also Chelsea’s all-time leading scorer so is definitely getting in my team.

Gareth Bale (Right-wing forward)

This guy won PFA Player of the Year twice (2011 and 2013). People forget about that. There’s only a handful of players who won that award more than once.

All day he’s got to get in there. I know he’s having a tough time now at Real Madrid but for me he’s got to get in.

Cristiano Ronaldo (Left-wing forward)

The last couple of seasons at Man United were absolutely brilliant. He really set the standard.

He scored goals, made goals, scored free-kicks and had a great work rate.

Thierry Henry (Centre forward)

For me, he’s the best player to ever play in this country.

Henry had absolutely everything. The goals, the assists, the record for being Arsenal’s record goalscorer. I can’t speak highly enough of him.
