Roma keen on permanent Chris Smalling deal but ‘not willing’ to meet Manchester United’s £25million price tag

The 30-year-old has made 21 total appearances for Roma before the season was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Both sides are thought to be willing to make a deal as it looks increasingly likely Smalling will remain in Italy beyond the end of the current campaign.

Corriere della Sera report that Roma are not willing to meet the £25million valuation but are hopeful of striking a deal.

They are likely to face competition from Arsenal who are also on the hunt for a new centre-back in the summer.

Smalling enjoyed life in Italy so far but may have an offer to stay closer to home.

Man United are thought to be willing to let the defender leave once the transfer window opens once they secure a replacement.

Several names have been linked with Old Trafford but Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly is believed to be the preferred option.

If Smalling were to go it would end of more than a decade at United where he played 323 games and won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League.

Give COVID-19 the red card

The quicker we work together to stop coronavirus spreading, the sooner we can get back into the pubs, the gyms and stadiums and arenas to see live sport again…

STAY AT HOME. Only leave for the following purposes:

  • to do one form of exercise a day – such as a run, walk or cycle, alone or with other people you live with
  • for any medical need – for example, to visit a pharmacy or deliver essential supplies to a vulnerable person
  • to travel to and from work – but only where this is absolutely necessary
