The pair were picking a combined Manchester United and Liverpool side using players from the former’s famed 1999 team and the latter’s 2019 Champions League winners.

And when Carragher said there was no room for Ryan Giggs in his side and would prefer Sadio Mane, Keane didn’t know what to say.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher enjoyed Keane’s pained expression so much he even felt compelled to change his Twitter profile picture so he would never forget it.

United’s 1999 team played a 4-4-2 formation but Carragher selected a 4-3-3 – as Liverpool do now – so after picking a United midfield trio of David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Keane, the Irishman was asked if that works.

“Yeah, I’m just worried where we’re going to fit the other United lads in, we’ve got Giggsy,” Keane said of his former teammate.

“Giggs is not going in my team,” Carragher interjected.

Former United captain Keane, who won the Champions League in 1999 with Giggs, was stunned, but Carragher explained his choice.

“I love Ryan Giggs. I’m not judging him on his career, I’m judging him on the 1999 season. Do you know how many goals he scored that season?”

It was agreed his handful of strikes wasn’t enough and Carragher then stated he believed Mane is the best left-sided attacker in the world given his 26 goals en route to European glory last term. He already has 14 this season.

“I love Ryan Giggs,” he added. “One of the greats of the Premier League history, longevity all that, playing to 40, but I don’t think at any one stage he was probably the best in that position, you may disagree, you know him better than me.

“But I think the numbers that Mane is getting now are a lot more than Giggs got in that season.”

Keane disagreed and pointed to the consistency Giggs showed in his career.

“Sometimes you might have the odd season where he might not be a 10 out of 10 but you’re on about that season it’s about big games,” he responded with.

“Look what Giggsy did in the semi-final, tell me another player on this planet that could have done what he did against Arsenal?”

The combined team

Peter Schmeichel, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Denis Irwin, Jaap Stam, Virgil van Dijk, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Mohamed Salah, Dwight Yorke.
