Anthony Joshua FINALLY reveals what was wrong with him before first Andy Ruiz Jr fight in New York City back in June

Anthony Joshua has revealed he suffered with a ‘health issue’ which left him feeling ‘drained’ and ‘tired’ before facing Andy Ruiz Jr in New York City in June.

For six months, the sporting world speculated as to what was wrong with the Brit before making his US debut. Rumours of a panic attack in the dressing room or a disagreement with his family were the two leading contenders as fans searched for an explanation.

From the glazed look on his expression during the walk out, to the bizarre neck massages in the ring, everything seemed quite off kilter for the Olympic Gold medallist at Madison Square Garden.

And now, after regaining his world heavyweight titles with a far more assured performance in Saudi Arabia against the same opponent, Joshua has revealed what happened on that fateful night in the Big Apple.

“I had some issue with my health which I was going through for a long time,” Joshua told Mike Costello of the BBC.

“I didn’t know what was wrong with me. I felt so tired and drained and thought it must be down to training.

“In the changing room before the fight I got a bucket of ice and was putting my head in it thinking ‘why do I feel so tired?’

“The responsibilities of being world champion are difficult. All that stuff, feeling so tired, dealing with obligations.

“Now I have energy, I haven’t missed a session.”

Joshua locked himself way in the gym for his rematch with Ruiz, focusing his training on purely boxing and limiting his strength and conditioning work.

Sticking behind a spiteful jab all night, the man from Watford cruised to a comfortable decision win and left the world champion bloodied, battered and outclassed.

And Joshua revealed he underwent a medical procedure in the wake of his defeat to Ruiz which dramatically hindered his first performance.

The Briton added: “After my check-ups it showed what the problem was and this is what you have to get sorted.

“Even in this camp I had an operation done but as I’d started training in June I had no issues.”
