But his career came to a shuddering stop in Catalonia and he was made available by boss Ernesto Valverde in the summer window, with Spurs keen.

Pochettino worked with Coutinho during their time at Espanyol together, signing him from Inter Milan in 2012.

According to The Sun, the Argentine is convinced rebuilding his squad would have been far easier with the playmaker in his side.

Coutinho moved to Bayern Munich instead and has struggled in Bavaria, scoring just twice and now having to settle for a place on the bench.

Giovani Lo Celso was signed from Real Betis, but Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Erik Lamela are continuing to flounder in north London.

England captain Harry Kane is the only player in the squad to get more than three Premier League goals so far this season, with Spurs languishing in 14th place after 12 games.
