Senior Arsenal figures are reportedly involved in a row over whether to appoint David O’Leary to the Premier League club’s board.

O’Leary has been an ambassador for the north London club since 2014 and there are certain members of the hierarchy who want to induct the former Gunners captain to the board as a football consultant.

According to the Daily Mail, Sir Chips Keswick and Lord Harris of Peckham are among those who want to promote the 61-year-old.

Head of football Raul Sanllehi, however, is said to be against the move.

Sanllehi appointed former Arsenal midfielder Edu as the club’s first ever technical director earlier this year.

There are thought to be reservations about creating another football advisor role at the club.

O’Leary is a legend at Arsenal and his 722 total appearances between 1975 and 1993 is still a club record.

During his time with the Gunners he won two league titles, two FA Cups and two League Cups.

Following a 19-year career in north London, he joined Leeds but injuries saw him retire in 1995. He went on to manage Leeds and then Aston Villa.

The former Republic of Ireland international was given an ambassadorial role five years ago and he has been pictured at the majority of Arsenal’s matches this season.

He has watched on as Unai Emery’s side struggle for form and consistency, with only four league wins seeing them down in sixth – eight points off the Premier League’s top four.
