Gareth Southgate showed ‘weak leadership’ as he dealt with the fallout from Raheem Sterling’s training camp bust-up with Joe Gomez, according to one angry talkSPORT caller.
Jonathan the Man United fan could not believe how Southgate treated Sterling, and he believes the England manager’s actions are further proof of the sterilisation of football.
Sterling has been dropped from the Three Lions’ squad for their next match, a Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro, having squared up to Gomez at St George’s Park on Monday.
The bust-up came in the wake of Sunday’s Premier League encounter between Liverpool and Man City, with Sterling and Gomez similarly clashing on the Anfield pitch as the Reds won 3-1.
Sterling has since apologised for his actions but will not be considered for selection when Montenegro visit Wembley. However, he remains with the squad and could feature three days later against Kosovo.
Many feel Sterling should have been axed from the squad entirely by Southgate and sent home, while others feel making the bust-up public – the FA released a statement confirming the incident – can only be a bad thing for the England squad.
And Jonathan the Man United supporter could not hold back his frustration as he called into talkSPORT’s Alan Brazil Sports’ Breakfast on Tuesday morning.
“I think it is absolutely pathetic and shows weak leadership,” Jonathan ranted while discussing Southgate.
“It’s bigger than what went on yesterday in my view. I believe football is becoming sterile and we are taking the passion out the game.

“Alan, how many bust-ups have you seen in dressing rooms and hotel bars? You deal with it in-house.
“These days you can’t tackle anyone, and you can’t celebrate a goal because you are looking at the stupid VAR screen. It just seems to me to be prevalent in the game.
“I can’t understand it. The guy has had a big game the day before and something might have been said. He grabbed him by the throat, but big deal.
“What you do is either show leadership by keeping it in-house and playing him in the game, or you say, ‘all right Raheem, that is diabolical. You are going home’.
“I wouldn’t like to see Southgate as a Premier League manager, I just don’t think he has it.”
