Jurgen Klopp would probably be the current Manchester United manager if it wasn’t for his wife.
That is according to former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson, who has claimed the eccentric German decided against joining the Red Devils because of his partner’s wishes.
Klopp was mooted as the man to bring United into a new era of success after David Moyes was sacked in 2014 following their failure to qualify for the Champions League.
He was doing a stellar job with Borussia Dortmund at the time, having guided them to back to back Bundesliga titles as well as steering them to the Champions League final against Bayern Munich in 2013.
And former Reds ace Thompson, speaking to TV2, has revealed Klopp would have become United manager if it wasn’t for his wife.
“I interviewed Klopp for Sky, and I asked if he and Liverpool were created for each other. He looked at me and asked why,” he said.
“Then Klopp told me he could have taken over Manchester United, but his wife said it wasn’t right.

“When Liverpool arrived, his wife said it was right. There is something strange there. It is as if he’s created for Liverpool.”
Klopp guided Liverpool to their sixth European title last summer, and Sunday’s brilliant 3-1 win over Manchester City has seen them become clear favourites to claim their first top flight title in almost 30 years.
And Thompson had big praise for the high-flying Merseyside club.
“This is one of the best Liverpool teams in the club’s history,” he added.
“In my time we always lost three to four games [at this stage of the season], but this team leads by nine points and lost only one game last season.
“This season they have beaten everyone, except for a draw at Old Trafford. They are doing something great.”
