Gareth Southgate has been picking players that don’t deserve their place in the England squad.
This is the view of former Arsenal player Perry Groves, who made the explosive claims on talkSPORT on Friday.
It comes after Southgate announced his 27-man squad for the Three Lions’ upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Montenegro and Kosovo.
There were call-ups for the likes of Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Chelsea forward Callum Hudson-Odoi.
However, Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish didn’t make the cut despite his good performances this season.
The likes of Kyle Walker, Dele Alli, Jesse Lingard and Michael Keane have not been called up but Groves believes even some of the players who are not in should have been dropped long before.
Groves told Jim White: “I think he’s [Southgate] been picking players that don’t deserve their place in the squad for their performances.
“The examples I’ll give you are Dele Alli. I think it took too long for him to be left out.
“Jesse Lingard. He had zero impact for Manchester United for probably a season, maybe a season and a half. He was just sort of running around not doing anything. Again, he’s getting in there on his name.
“Michael Keane. I’ve watched Everton quite a lot this season and Michael Keane playing for Everton was struggling himself. At the ball, with the ball, he always looked like he was at full stretch and never looked comfortable but he kept getting picked.”

But what really appeared to get on Groves’ nerves was Southgate overlooking Grealish.
Groves went on to say that he believes Grealish would be much better suited than ‘waste of a position’ Everton midfielder Fabian Delph.
He added: “I absolutely think he’s done the same with Fabian Delph instead of Jack Grealish.
“Everton have been pedestrian, they’ve been slow in possession, they’ve been playing sideways and Fabian Delph has been in that midfield. He’s a decent player, like a poor man’s James Milner.
“Jack Grealish has been explosive this season, he gives you something different, he beats people in tight spaces.
“Southgate will say that Delph will give you more options in a deeper position as they play in different positions.
“But he knows about Fabian Delph so if he wants to play someone deeper he’s got Henderson, Declan Rice, Harry Winks and at a push Oxlade-Chamberlain.
“They’re playing Montenegro and Kosovo so these are development games, you can experiment.

“He doesn’t know Jack Grealish as a character or what he’s like around the players so I don’t see why Fabian Delph is in that squad.
“Jack Grealish, in my opinion, should be in that squad over Fabian Delph. Fabian Delph is a waste of a position because he’s not going to give you anything different. He’s not going to give you something you don’t know already.
