Andy Ruiz Jr has revealed that he has lost some weight while preparing for the Anthony Joshua rematch, but not as much as it may have appeared.
The Mexican-American heavyweight’s body transformation caught the eye in recent images he’s posted, particularly after sparring with Michael Hunter.
However, Ruiz Jr explained iFL TV: “Right now I’m only like 3lbs less than when I fought Anthony Joshua [at 268lbs].
“A lot of people are saying, ‘He looks too skinny, he’s not gonna be strong.’
“Those are people that don’t really know about boxing.
“We’ve been looking really good inside the ring and I just wanna be 6lbs/8lbs lighter than I was for the first fight on June 1.
“That’s the goal right now, it’s gonna make me feel a lot better, more slicker, more faster, and it’s gonna tell on December 7.
The ‘Destroyer’ is not the only one losing weight, with Joshua also noticeably slimmer ahead of the Saudi Arabia repeat or revenge fight.
Ruiz continued: “I have seen that he did trim down, he lost a little bit of weight. I don’t know if that’s gonna be good for him.
“I’ve seen a lot of fights of him, he’s not good at boxing around.
“I know he’s been practicing, been working, but inside of the ring it’s a lot different.
“He can’t be that quick to learn those skills. No matter what he has up his sleeve, it’s my job for him to not do that.”
