How Manchester United could line up next season AND in 2021 as Solskjaer’s ‘three-year plan’ is revealed

It’s been a woeful start to the campaign for Manchester United.

They have suffered defeats to West Ham, Crystal Palace and Newcastle this term and are sitting 12th in the table having won only two of their opening eight Premier League games.

Having picked up just nine points out of a possible 24, this is United’s worst start to a campaign for 30 years.

However, Ed Woodward, the executive vice-chairman, insisted a fortnight ago that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer retains the full backing of the club.

The United hierarchy will reportedly continue with Solskjaer with the view of him overseeing a three-year plan to restore the club to their former heights.

This backing involves Solskjaer bringing EIGHT new players to Old Trafford across the next two summer transfer windows to finish building his new-look United side.

So who could be signed in this summer and the next? Having browsed all the transfer gossip, talkSPORT.com has identified Man United’s possible XI for the next two campaigns if they sign their targets…

Summer 2020

Ben Chilwell (Leicester)

The left-back has emerged as one of the finest young players in the Premier League over the past few seasons, and he’s currently playing a key role for the Foxes as they attempt to gatecrash the top six after starting the campaign strongly.

His rise to fame has coincided with some of England’s biggest clubs keeping tabs on him, with the 22-year-old allegedly a target of Man City’s over the summer.

Chilwell remained at the King Power Stadium and has made six appearances this season, but if United are to secure his services they will need to fend off interest from Chelsea, who are reportedly frontrunners to land the Englishman.

Ivan Rakitic (Barcelona)

Croatia midfielder Ivan Rakitic may look to leave Barcelona in the summer if he doesn’t get more game time.

The World Cup finalist joined Barcelona in 2014 and has gone on to amass more than 250 appearances for the club.

But he has fallen down the pecking order following the summer arrival of Frenkie de Jong from Ajax, with six of his seven appearances this season coming from the bench.

Rakitic would add some much-needed experience to the side and although he is now at the ripe age of 31, he would be a handy addition for Solskjaer on a short-term deal.

Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund)

Speculation has been rife about the teenager’s future at Dortmund following his brilliant breakthrough season last term.

The England international has thrived in the Bundesliga since leaving Manchester City in 2017.

Solskjaer has reportedly identified Sancho as his main summer target – but the winger will surely want to be playing in the Champions League next season – which isn’t looking likely at the moment.

Sancho fits the bill for the type of players Solskjaer wants in his team. He’s young, English and has a winning mentality and he’d be an incredible signing for United if they can get a deal over the line.

Moussa Dembele (Lyon)

Another name who is doing the rounds in the Man United rumour mill is Moussa Dembele.

The Lyon striker bagged 23 goals and picked up six assists in all competitions last season and is seemingly being eyed as a potential frontman for the Red Devils.

He has also started this season superbly, with six goals in eight games so far, and the Daily Record claim United have opened talks with Dembele about a possible summer switch.

Moreover, it is believed the striker is keen on the prospect of a move to Old Trafford – but he won’t come cheap with the Ligue1 side demanding £71mfor his services.

Summer 2021

Ruben Dias (Benfica)

In recent weeks there have been question marks about whether Victor Lindelof has enough quality to be the long-term partner of Harry Maguire in defence.

On his day, Lindelof can be a rock at the back but he is too inconsistent and United probably will look to replace him in this summer or the next.

In recent weeks, Benfica centre-back Dias has been linked with the Red Devils.

The Portugal international has emerged as one of the finest young defenders on the continent following his emergence from Benfica’s academy in 2017.

The defender has 13 caps for Portugal and has made 85 appearances for Benfica.

The Primeira Liga side are desperate to keep the defender and are willing to hand him a new contract just 12 months after he signed his last renewal following interest from United, Juventus and Atletico Madrid.

James Maddison (Leicester)

Recent reports suggested United are stepping up their interest in Leicester midfielder James Maddison.

The 22-year-old has had an impressive start to the campaign, netting two goals and recording two assists in seven matches.

Maddison’s superb displays have inevitably caught the eye of Old Trafford chiefs, who are keen to add more creative players to their midfield.

However, the Foxes playmaker will surely want to move to a club playing in the Champions League if was to move – so a move next summer may be more feasible.

The Englishman is thriving under Rodgers and has only spent one full season with the Foxes, so he will probably stick around for a few more seasons.

Declan Rice (West Ham)

West Ham midfielder Rice has enjoyed a superb rise in football and he will no doubt be on the radar of some big clubs for his solid displays last season and in the early stages of this campaign.

However, a big money move to United may come a little too soon for the 20-year-old and he may seek to gain a bit more experience at West Ham before he moves.

In the summer of 2021, Rice will have had three full seasons under his belt and will probably be a lot more accomplished than he is now.

If he continues to dazzle, however, it wouldn’t be surpising if a club made a move for him in January or in the summer window.

John McGinn (Aston Villa)

A player who could replace Rakitic in the midfield after his year of service is McGinn.

The 24-year-old Scotland midfielder was linked with a £50million move to Old Trafford following his impressive debut season in the Midlands.

McGinn, who joined Villa for just £2.75million from Hibernian last summer, scored in the Championship play-off final as Dean Smith’s men won promotion to the Premier League.

And he has scored three goals in eight top flight games this term, while United have looked light in midfield.

The Scot is hard-working and also has great technique, but may need to prove himself for a bit longer before moving to a bigger club.
