‘Can we play Manchester United?’ – Ally McCoist goes on hilarious rant about Scotland’s woes after latest embarrassment in Russia

Ally McCoist went on a hilarious rant about Scotland’s woes following the latest embarrassment of their miserable Euro 2020 qualifying campaign.

The Scots were battered 4-0 by Russia on Thursday night to end their slim hopes of automatic qualification for next summer’s tournament – and manager Steve Clarke described the defeat as ‘the lowest of the low’.

His side conceded four goals in 27 second half minutes in Moscow, which means they’ve now let in 14 goals in Clarke’s five games in charge.

And McCoist wonders whether they might be better off with 67-year-old Scotland legend Alan Rough between the sticks.

The Scot told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “We should play Roughie. Is there a possibility they’d allow us to play two goalkeepers? Can we start a campaign?

“If we’re feeling for Steve Clarke, have we not got to feel for Alex McLeish and Gordon Strachan?

“It’s not the manager’s fault and it’s never been the manager’s fault in the last few cases.

“I’d rather do five days a week here and start at 5am than take that job!”

And McCoist, who earned 61 caps for his country, compares the situation to the current turmoil at Manchester United.

“We’ve got one or two good players defensively,” he added. “[John] McGinn’s a good player, [Andy] Robertson’s a good player, [Kieran] Tierney’s a good player.

“[Scott] McTominay’s still got a lot of work to do. Let’s not get carried away just because he’s playing for Manchester United, do you remember where Manchester United are?

“That’ll be a good game actually, Scotland vs Manchester United. Can we organise Scotland vs Manchester United?”

Scotland can still qualify for the Euros via the play-offs, having won their Nations League group last year.
