Callum Hudson-Odoi opens up on injury hell and new Chelsea contract following Blues comeback under Frank Lampard

Callum Hudson-Odoi is finally settled at Chelsea after overcoming a ruptured Achilles tendon and signing a new-five year contract.

It’s been a turbulent 2019 for the teenager, who handed in a transfer request, broke into the England team, and suffered a career-threatening injury all within this calendar year.

Following an initial lack of opportunities under former Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri, the 18-year-old asked the club to sell him to Bayern Munich in January, who were desperate for his signature.

But fast-forward nine months and Hudson-Odoi now finds himself at the forefront of a youth revolution under Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge, starring alongside Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount in the first XI.

And with his Achilles tendon fully healed and his future tied down to the club for the next five years, Hudson-Odoi is excited about what comes next.

“It was obviously a disappointment to get the injury. It’s something you don’t plan on and you don’t want it in life, but you’ve got to go through it,” he told talkSPORT’s James Savundra.

“My mentality was to stay strong because I was doing good for myself personally, to get a run of games and be involved in so many big games.

“The injury came and there were bigger games coming on, so there was disappointment but I’m back now playing and I’m happy. There process went perfectly to plan.”

He added: “I’m delighted with the contract; to get the five years is an amazing feeling.

“I’ve been at the club so long already so to stay here is another amazing feeling.

“Now that’s finished, I’ve got to focus and work hard now to get a place in the team.”

Last week, Hudson-Odoi was recalled to the England Under-21 squad and started in Chelsea’s 4-1 victory over Southampton.

Meanwhile, fellow Blues stars Mount and Abraham were called up to the senior squad and found the net at St Mary’s.

“Right now, [England is] flooded with Chelsea players!” Hudson-Odoi added.

“It’s a good thing because it’s showing that we’re doing really well at the club.

“Hopefully we’re showing the managers that we want to work hard, we want to play games, everyone’s enjoying their football at the moment, and it’s a good feeling around the camp.”
