It would be a mistake to think about Premier League title race now, says Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola after Wolves loss

Pep Guardiola insists it would be ‘a mistake’ for his Manchester City side to think about the title race in October.

City suffered a shock 2-0 home defeat to Wolves on Sunday, leaving them eight points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

And with 30 more games to go, Guardiola’s focus remains on Crystal Palace, the club’s next opponent after the international break.

He told talkSPORT: “With five points [behind Liverpool, prior to the Wolves game] we’ve had to think about it, so we’ve had to try to win our games. We’ve played really well in most of the games.

“The reality is like this, our team won everything in many circumstances and we have to accept it [the Wolves defeat].

“Now we have to think to Crystal Palace and then the Champions League, game by game, so we cannot be focused in far, far away because that would be a mistake.

“So we have to try to come back like we have done many times and do it.

“The pressure is always here in the big clubs. I know what we are as a team and how lovely our players are and today was a bad day.”

City were fortunate not to be behind at the break as Patrick Cutrone and Raul Jimenez spurned glorious chances to give Wolves the lead.

David Silva hit the crossbar from a free-kick in the second-half, but Adama Traore struck twice in the last 10 minutes to stun the hosts.

Guardiola added: “We didn’t play at our level, that happens sometimes, so we accept it and work from here.”
