The Liverpool Echo claims the 31-year-old will effectively be tasked with smoothing the transition between the academy graduates to the first team, a role previously held by Pepjin Lijnders.

Lijnders was promoted by Klopp to the position of assistant head coach after the sudden departure of Zeljko Buvac; Klopp’s long-time assistant who left unannounced prior to the 2018 Champions League final against Real Madrid.

The decision to promote Lijnders is by no means a knee-jerk reaction; the Dutchman has been with the Reds since 2014 and was tasked with preparing the team ahead of the Carabao Cup win over MK Dons while Klopp collected the FIFA Best Men’s Coach of the Year Award.

He worked under former Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas at Porto, developing the youth academy.

It was in Portugal where he too worked alongside Matos, who has been with the Primeira Liga side since 2011, working as the B team assistant boss and opposition analyst.

He briefly left Porto for a short spell in China in 2016, before returning two years later and retaking his position as assistant boss of the B team.
