Liverpool to play Club World Cup semi-final at Qatar 2022 World Cup venue in December

Liverpool will compete in a brand new 2022 World Cup venue in December when they head to Qatar for the Club World Cup.

The Champions League and Super Cup winners will play at the Education City Stadium at the end of the year, FIFA has confirmed.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will automatically enter the competition at the semi-final stage on December 18, owing to their exploits in Europe from last season.

The Reds beat Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea in the space of three months to become undisputed kings of Europe and their reward is a chance to lift the Club World Cup before the end of the calendar year.

The 40,000-seater stadium will also host the third place play-off and the final as preparations for the World Cup in 2022 get underway.

The Khalifa International stadium, another venue for three years time, will host two matches as part of the tournament schedule.

The Khalifa International Stadium will also host a number of games from the tournament, with the other semi-final taking place at the venue; which was first opened in 1976.

The Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium will host the remaining fixtures, meaning Al Sadd will play at least one game at their home stadium. The Qatar Stars League champions are coached by Xavi and qualified as host representatives.

Liverpool face the prospect of playing 10 games in 29 days over the Christmas period thanks to their participation in this tournament.

The Carabao Cup quarter-finals are scheduled for the week before Christmas with the Reds playing their final Champions League group game the week prior.

CLUB WORLD CUP SCHEDULE

  • Match 2: Al Sadd/Hienghene Sport vs CF Monterrey
  • Match 3: ES Tunis vs AFC Champions League winners
  • Semi-final 1: Copa Libertadores champions vs Match 3 winners
  • Semi-final 2: Liverpool vs Match 2 winners

Liverpool were originally set to visit West Ham United on December 21, but this was postponed to accommodate their Qatari commitments.

Given the competition is taking place in the winter, any fans looking to travel East from Merseyside will be greeted by relatively mild temperatures ranging between 15 and 24°C.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed in July 2018 the 2022 World Cup will take place during the winter months owing to the extreme heat of the summer months in Qatar.
