Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp impressed by Sheffield United and admits to ‘lucky’ Georginio Wijnaldum winning goal

Jurgen Klopp heaped huge praise on Sheffield United following Liverpool’s narrow win at Bramall Lane.

The Reds won 1-0, with Georginio Wijnaldum’s second-half strike the difference between the two sides.

Wijnaldum’s winner came in rather fortunate fashion though – the Dutchman’s tame volley squirming under the usually very dependable Dean Henderson.

Liverpool were guilty of not being very clinical, with Sadio Mane wasting two golden chances in the first-half, while Mo Salah should have scored shortly after Wijnaldum’s goal.

However, the Premier League leaders got the result they were looking for and continue their perfect start – winning seven out of seven league games.

This is only the second time in the club’s history that Liverpool have won their first seven matches of the new league season.

They are two wins away from equalling the record Chelsea set in 2005/06 of coming out on top in their first nine games of the new campaign.

But the Blades caused Liverpool plenty of problems and Klopp was quick to commend the efforts of Chris Wilder’s men and the home fans too.

When asked by talkSPORT’s Sam Matterface how difficult the match was, Klopp said: “Very! Very difficult because the opponents were very organised and I felt a sensational spirit in the stadium together with the team, it was a really good atmosphere.

“[Sheffield United were] fighting, a complete fighting unit to play against and they were really, ready for us to be honest and it wasn’t really a ‘clicking’ day.”

However, Klopp also reserved some praise for his team who got the win on a day where they were far from their best.

And the German admitted his side got a lucky break when Wijnaldum scored.

Klopp added: “I thought we defended the counter-attacks really well… we did well and both wingers were ready to work really hard.

“Then we scored the goal which was of course lucky and unlucky for Sheffield United and then we played the game well.

“I don’t think we didn’t play well, it’s not about that. You have to be ready to win a game like this and that’s football. It means you defend well and you attack well.

“We had chances, we didn’t have ten chances but then we scored the goal and then we had another three maybe not ‘no brainers’ but close to it.

“You have to be ready to fight for the result and that’s what we did.”
