Martin Skrtel: Former Liverpool defender has Atalanta contract terminated THREE weeks after joining Serie A outfit

Former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has had his contract at Atalanta cancelled just three weeks after signing for the Serie A club.

The Slovakian, 34, joined Atalanta on August 9 as a free agent after leaving Fenerbahce at the end of the season.

Skrtel is without a club after having his time at Atalanta cut dramatically short

However, less than a month after moving and having played in just one game, Skrtel has left by mutual consent.

It’s understood that a dispute with Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini is at the heart of the matter.

Tuttomercatoweb reported that Skrtel left the club on Saturday evening.

He was expected to play a big role for the Italian side this season, particularly due to the fact they’re playing in the Champions League for the first time in their history.

Atalanta have been drawn alongside Manchester City, Shakhtar Donetsk and Dinamo Zagreb in the group stage.

Skrtel, who has 103 international caps to his name, spent eight years at Anfield and made over 200 Premier League appearances.

He begun his career at Slovakian side AS Trencin before moving to Zenit St Petersburg of Russia.

After leaving Liverpool in 2016, he joined Turkish club Fenerbahce where he spent three seasons, before embarking on his ill-fated switch to Atalanta.
