Chris Smalling nears Man United exit with Roma to sign England defender on loan

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Roma over a loan move for Chris Smalling, according to reports.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano tweeted: “Chris Smalling to AS Roma from Man United, here we go! Total agreement for a simple loan (€3M to Man Utd) without buy option. The player has accepted.”

Smalling has fallen out of favour this season at Old Trafford following the arrival of Harry Maguire from Leicester.

The England international is now set to join Romelu Lukaku in leaving for Serie A this summer, while Alexis Sanchez is also expected to complete a loan move to Inter Milan.

Inter will pay around £2.7m to United for the move and there is no option or obligation to buy at the end of the loan.

The defender joined United in 2010 in a £10m deal from Fulham and is the club’s longest-serving player.

He remains one of just a handful of players who remain at the club to have played under Sir Alex Ferguson. However, Solskjaer has made it clear that he has too many defenders at his disposal and he’s willing to offload Marcos Rojo in the coming days. Alexis Sanchez is currently in Milan to complete a loan deal to Inter.
