Former Liverpool chief Damien Comolli says the club have made ‘massive progress’ under Jurgen Klopp, and says the Reds’ 2005 Champions League win is still talked about in Istanbul.
Liverpool return to the Turkish capital tonight with another European trophy in their sights, as they take on Chelsea for the UEFA Super Cup.
Now director of football at Fenerbahce, Comolli joined talkSPORT on Wednesday to look ahead to the clash and expects Klopp’s side to go full-throttle to lift the trophy.
And he has credited the German boss for instilling his men with their irrepressible team spirit and self-belief, saying he has helped transform the Reds into the ‘best team in Europe’.

Speaking to talkSPORT host Jim White, Comolli said: “Since Jurgen Klopp came the club and team have made massive progress in terms of the talent they have acquired and the type of football they play.
“He has done incredibly well. He has created this team spirit, this determination that has taken the Premier League and Europe by storm, in a way.
“I was lucky to attend the Champions League final in Madrid for French TV and the feeling I got from this Liverpool team was they had so much determination that nothing could stop them from lifting the trophy at the end of the game.
“I think that comes from leadership, leadership being Klopp and players like Jordan Henderson and Virgil van Dijk.
“The biggest credit I will give Klopp is he’s created self-belief in the team, that nothing can stop them, and that’s very impressive work from any manager.
“He has been fantastic.”
Liverpool will return to the scene of their famous 2005 Champions League win to take on the Blues, albeit in a different stadium – Besiktas’ Vodafone Park.
And Comolli told talkSPORT the Reds’ thrilling comeback is still regularly on the lips of the Istanbul natives, with the excitement spreading through the city as they welcome back the now six-time European champions.
“There is a lot of excitement, a lot of animation around the city,” he added.
“I was driving near the Besiktas stadium this morning for a couple of meetings and there is a lot of excitement.
“Obviously everybody in Istanbul talks about the Liverpool vs AC Milan final, everybody still talks about this and refers to it.
“So the excitement is certainly here.”
