Sergey Kovalev vs Anthony Yarde officially announced for August 24 in Russia

Sergey Kovalev will defend his WBO light-heavyweight world title against Anthony Yarde on August 24 in his hometown of Chelyabinsk, Russia.

The 36-year-old three-time world champion stakes his belt against the 27-year-old British mandatory challenger, who has yet to be tested at this level.

Yarde – 18-0 (17 KOs) – had a limited amateur career and so has been brought along slowly in the early stages of his pro campaign.

The Londoner boasts an impressive numerical record thus far, although he is yet to step onto the world stage.

Regardless, he’s slowly worked his way up to #1 in the WBO light-heavyweight rankings and has subsequently been called as the champion’s next challenger.

Kovalev – 33-3-1 (28 KOs) – is now in the latter stages of his career.

A few years ago, the Russian was unified champion and rated as one of the pound-for-pound best in boxing before two losses to Andre Ward put paid to this status.

However, he’s since regained the WBO crown and adapted beautifully to win it back once again in February after being knocked out by Eleider Alvarez last year.

It’s currently unclear whether Kovalev has faded to the point where Yarde can capitalise, or if Yarde is too inexperienced to handle Kovalev.

Yarde said: “This is my time now and I am going to show the world what I am all about

“Waiting for my time to come around could have been a frustration but we turned it into a positive and I am even more ready to seize the moment.

“Everything has fallen perfectly into place for me, this will be my coronation as world champion and I am going to realise my dream by beating the most decorated of the current world title holders.”
