Henrikh Mkhitaryan: Arsenal star could miss Europa League final vs Chelsea due to Armenia–Azerbaijan relations

Henrikh Mkhitaryan could miss Arsenal’s Europa League final against Chelsea due to the lack of diplomatic relations between his native Armenia and Azerbaijan, the country hosting the May 29 showpiece.

The Gunners booked their place in the final with Thursday’s defeat of Valencia, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netting a hat-trick to seal a 7-3 aggregate victory.

Arsenal have booked their place in their first European final since 2006

They will take on Chelsea in Baku after the Blues beat Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties in their semi-final.

However, Unai Emery could be forced to drop Mkhitaryan from his squad for the final over potential visa issues.

A conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region has caused diplomatic relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan to break down, with Mkhitaryan not travelling to the country for a number of years.

He didn’t visit Gabala with Borussia Dortmund for a 2015 Europa League group stage tie, and also didn’t take part in Arsenal’s clash with Qarabag earlier this season, despite UEFA offering their support over a visa application.

It is understood UEFA will again assist Mkhitaryan should he wish to travel to Baku for the final.
