Nicky Butt has been arrested on suspicion of assault.
The former Manchester United midfielder was held by police at 2pm on Tuesday following reports a woman has been assaulted.
Butt, who is now the head of the Red Devils academy, was reportedly held in custody into the evening and was due to be interviewed during United’s Champions League game with Barcelona.
According to the Daily Mail, the woman sustained a small cut to her hand and did not require hospital treatment.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: ‘Police were called at around 2pm on Tuesday 16 April 2019, to reports that a woman had been assaulted at a house on Broadway, Hale.
‘The woman received a small cut to her hand and does not require hospital treatment.
‘A 44–year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and remains in custody for questioning.’
The club refused to comment on a day where fellow Class of ’92 graduate Paul Scholes was charged by the FA after allegedly placing 150 bets during a four-year period.
Butt made 387 appearances for the club between 1992 and 2004 and has excelled in his new role in charge of the youngsters.
Since being appointed to the role in 2016, the emergence of the likes of Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Angel Gomes have all been accredited to the former England international.
