Arsenal vs Newcastle confirmed team news: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang benched, Aaron Ramsey fit to start, Granit Xhaka injured

Aaron Ramsey has overcome injury to start Arsenal’s clash with Newcastle – but there is no place in the starting XI for top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Granit Xhaka misses out completely, failing to recover from a knock picked up on international duty, while Nacho Monreal has shaken off a minor injury to start at the Emirates.

Arsenal, who are without the suspended Lucas Torreira, can overtake bitter north London rivals Tottenham in third if they get a point against the Magpies.

Spurs suffered yet another away defeat on Sunday, losing 2-1 to Liverpool courtesy of an unfortunate 90th minute own goal from Toby Alderweireld.

Meanwhile, Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles starts after he missed the 2-2 draw at Bournemouth due to a knee problem.

Fabian Schar misses out through suspension, but would almost certainly have sat out anyway after being knocked unconscious in a clash of heads during Switzerland’s 2-0 Euro 2020 qualifying win over Georgia last Saturday.

The Magpies will be looking to move further away from the relegation zone, with eight points currently separating them from Cardiff.
