It was sixth versus eighth in the light heavyweight division as Volkan Oezdemir met Dominick Reyes with a shot at champion Jon Jones a real possibility in the future of the victor.
Reyes is 10-0 in MMA while Oezdemir is 15-3, but two of those losses have come in his last two outings against top contender Anthony Smith and heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier. No shame there.
The 29-year-old Reyes made a dangerous start to proceedings and showcased his obvious strength on his feet, but one kick from his Swiss counterpart put him on his back and in trouble.
The unbeaten fighter managed to recover and see out the round, but it was Oezdemir that insisted on coming forward and offered the most threat.
Each man defended a takedown attempt from the other in quick succession as the second round saw more calculated fighting with neither man holding a clear advantage.
An exchange at the end of the second saw Reyes get a bloody nose for his troubles, but he still appeared to be landing the heavier strikes as the bout wore on.
Save for some obligatory trading that didn’t have much substance, the third round petered out a little bit in the same vein as many other fights at the O2 had on the night.
Oezdemir caught Reyes with a stiff shot at the bell, but there was a feeling as the fight went to the judges’ scorecards that Reyes’ pristine record would remain intact.
Reyes would grab the victory by split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28).
Still, for either man, they’d have to do a hell of a lot more if they wanted to remotely trouble the legendary Jon Jones.
