Errol Spence vs Mikey Garcia result: Champion delivers ‘one-sided massacre’ as promised, calls out Manny Pacquiao

Errol Spence dominated Mikey Garcia from start to finish and defended his IBF welterweight title on Saturday night in Texas.

Pre-fight, the champion vowed to produce a ‘one-sided massacre’ of his smaller challenger, and absolutely delivered on this promise by winning every round on all three judges’ scorecards.

From the moment the fight began, Spence was clearly the more active of the pair and landed a couple of body shots in addition to his jabs in a ‘feeling out’ opener.

Garcia got off to a slow start and failed to up the tempo at any point as he was continually frustrated by his opponent’s boxing ability while being simultaneously wary of his power.

Between the third and fifth rounds the bout started to heat up with Mikey Garcia landing the occasional straight right, but ultimately being comprehensively outgunned by Errol Spence’s southpaw left.

As the second half of the fight progressed, it became more and more uncomfortable to watch with the smaller man absorbing far too much punishment than was necessary.

It would not have been a poor decision should Garcia’s corner have stopped the contest, especially after Spence’s most dominant round, pummelling the Mexican-American in the ninth.

However, the fight did go the distance and was scored unanimously 120-108, 120-108, 120-107 in the champion’s favour.

After the win, Errol Spence immediately called out Manny Pacquiao who watched from ringside: “That’s the fight I want next.”

Pacquiao quickly got on the mic and responded: “Why not? We can give the fans a good fight.”

Earlier in the night, former WBC super-middleweight champion David Benavidez returned to the ring, stopping J’Leon Love in two rounds.

Also on the undercard, ex-WBC bantamweight king Luis Nery knocked out McJoe Arroyo in four.
