Perhaps no fighter since Conor McGregor has captured the imagination of MMA fans quite like Askren has managed to do since joining UFC.

The 34-year-old is a two-time NCAA Division 1 champion and former welterweight champion in Bellator and ONE with an unbeaten MMA record of 19-0.

After years of ‘will he, won’t he’, Askren is finally here in the UFC and he defeated Robbie Lawler in his first outing for he company at UFC 235.

However, it came under controversial circumstances when the referee called for a stoppage believing that Lawler was out, but he popped right back up.

Lawler said he would like a rematch in the wake of the defeat, but Askren is in London to oversee Masvidal Vs Till and has his sights set on moving closer to a title shot.

UFC president Dana White and Askren’s relationship is famously tumultuous and many believed White would pressure Askren to rematch Lawler, but the wrestling legend told talkSPORT at the O2 Arena that is not the case.

“None so far. I haven’t heard from him. You know, last night we had a conversation over text but he hasn’t said anything to me [about a rematch]. If you asked UFC fans who should be my first UFC fight, Robbie Lawler would have been really low on that list.

And now, I think the UFC are more connected to the fans and they know the fans want something else. The fans would choose me and Till over me and Robbie [Lawler] like eight or nine to one or something.”

One has to think it makes a lot of sense for Askren to target Till. Gorilla is third in the world right now and has just had a shot at the welterweight champion and a win over him would surely catapult Askren into the path of Kamara Usman.

“A whole bunch of reasons. Third in the world, I think I beat him pretty easy, he talks trash with me, he brings in the English crowd – it makes a lot of sense.”

Askren talks the talk and thus far in his MMA career, no one can say he hasn’t walked the walk. When asked about stepping octagon following Till Vs Masvidal, Askren said with a smile “I’ll see who I have to talk to in order to make that happen.”
