Sergey Kovalev ordered to defend light-heavyweight world title against Anthony Yarde next

WBO light-heavyweight world champion Sergey Kovalev has been ordered to defend against mandatory challenger Anthony Yarde next.

The sanctioning body have given both parties 30 days (until April 12) to agree a deal or purse bids will be called.

35-year-old Kovalev recently regained the WBO belt from Eleider Alvarez, becoming champion for the third time in his storied career.

The Russian was at one stage the unified king at light-heavyweight before being dethroned by Andre Ward.

27-year-old Yarde has been brought along at a controversial pace by promoter Frank Warren and trainer/manager Tunde Ajayi with some fans frustrated by his level of opposition faced to date.

However, after his last win over Travis Reeves, Warren indicated that they were now ready to let the exciting prospect off the leash and now have the perfect opportunity to silence all critics against a respected world champion.
