Andy Robertson: talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham calls on Liverpool to fine defender for ‘idiotic’ yellow card against Bayern Munich

talkSPORT host Adrian Durham has slammed Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson for his ‘ridiculous’ yellow card that he picked up against Bayern Munich.

Robertson was cautioned by the referee for an ill-timed tackle on Leon Goretzka in the final moments of the second leg of the last-16 tie, which the Reds comfortably won.

It was a wonderful night in Europe for Liverpool with Robertson’s yellow one of the only stains on the performance

It means the defender is suspended for the the first leg of Liverpool’s Champions League quarter-final match.

The suspension is a kick in the teeth for Jurgen Klopp’s men considering the offence was committed when Liverpool were not in any danger of being knocked out.

And Durham insisted that Robertson’s ill-discipline should be dealt with internally too and called on the Anfield club to fine the 25-year-old for his actions.

Speaking on Thursday’s edition of Drivetime, Durham said: “I think they have to come down hard on Andy Robertson. I think it’s a shocking thing he did yesterday.

Durham believes Liverpool should come down hard on Robertson for his yellow card

“He should be fined by Liverpool for letting his team down.

“He got a yellow card at the end and it was a ridiculous yellow card – Liverpool are through and he gets himself a yellow card which rules him out of the first leg in the quarter-final.

“He knew he got it wrong straight away but what an idiotic thing to do.

“If Liverpool are going to have a chance of winning the Champions League then they have to get everything right and that includes their discipline but if they just let this go, then no one will learn anything.”

Robertson’s suspension means Klopp will have to re-jig his line-up and get someone else to fill in at left-back.

Likely candidates for the role include versatile midfielder James Milner and calamitous full-back Alberto Moreno.

And although there are no shortages for the Reds, Durham said Robertson’s absence will be a big one.

Moreno, who has a reputation as a liability at Anfield, may fill in for Robertson

He added: “It could be a relatively simple quarter-final for Liverpool but if they get a Barcelona or Manchester City, that’s Moreno they’ve got at left-back…

“You’re still struggling anyway because your best left-back by miles has made himself unavailable for it.”
