The Champion Hurdle will kick off another thrilling week of racing at the Cheltenham Festival.

The first day will be headlined by the Unibet Champion Hurdle which has been won for the past two years by the Nicky Henderson-trained Buveur D’Air.

The champion will return to defend his crown this year and we’ll have full coverage of the big opening race on talkSPORT.

What is the Champion Hurdle?

The Champion Hurdle is a Grade 1 National Hunt race run at Cheltenham racecourse every year.

It is run on the Old Course at Cheltenham over a distance of two miles and half a furlong with eight fences jumped during the race.

The prize fund for the race is over £400,000, with the winner set to bag around £225,000 for finishing first.

When is the Champion Hurdle?

The 2019 Unibet Champion Hurdle Challenge Trophy will take place on Tuesday, March 12.

The race is due off at 15.30 and is the first ‘Championship’ race of the four-day Festival.

Who will run in the Champion Hurdle?

Buveur D’Air is bidding for a third successive victory in this race but is behind favourite Apples Jade in the betting.

Laurina is also well fancied, while EspoirDAllen, Melon and Sharjah have their E/W backers.
