Solskjaer will get a warm welcome when he returns to Old Trafford

United’s travelling fans chanted Solskjaer’s name for the much of the Cardiff trip and he can expect a raucous reception on Wednesday.

His team face a desperately struggling Huddersfield side who travel on the back of five consecutive defeats, including a 3-1 home defeat by relegation rivals Southampton most recently.

What the managers are saying

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (Man United): “I just smile when I think about Manchester United, playing football for them, walking out at Old Trafford in front of the fans. I have never felt so comfortable than in these walls. You just feel it when you come in, like family.

“Then you see the players, and you think ‘wow, I’m actually managing this group of quality players’ That’s my job now. I want to go out and play with them.”

Wagner’s team are struggling for results

David Wagner (Huddersfield): “When you look at the season and look at certain games, some are teams you think you are going to struggle against, and (Southampton) was at home, so it was very important for us.

“A game against United also counts for three points, so three points there are as good. We honestly need to stay positive and look ahead now. We did very well against Arsenal away, so why not United as well.”

Team news

United striker Romelu Lukaku looks likely to miss the clash.

The Belgium international was given time off due to a private matter and missed the trip to Cardiff, where fellow forward Alexis Sanchez was absent through injury.

Defenders Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian were also missing in the Welsh capital, as were full-back Antonio Valencia and midfielder Scott McTominay.

Wagner is hopeful midfielder Jonathan Hogg will be available for Huddersfield

Hogg missed last weekend’s loss to Southampton after taking a knock to his knee. Fellow midfielder Rajiv Van La Parra could also return nearly three months after suffering a back injury.

Tommy Smith (hamstring), Aaron Mooy (knee), Danny Williams (knee) and Abdelhamid Sabiri (collarbone) definitely remain sidelined.

Predicted line-ups

Man United: De Gea; Young, Lindelof, Jones, Shaw; Herrera, Matic, Pogba; Lingard, Rashford, Martial

Huddersfield: Lossl; Jorgensen, Schindler, Kongolo; Durm, Bacuna, Billing, Lowe; Pritchard; Kachunga, Depoitre
