Rodgers said: “To play 500 games for Celtic is a real testament to your professionalism, your perseverance and persistence, and your quality.

“You see what he is now. He controls the game, and I thought Scott and Callum McGregor in there in the middle were great, ticking the game over, and being aggressive when they needed to be.

“He was fantastic, and we gave him a round of applause in the changing room. To play that number of games for a club like this, with the pressure here, is fantastic. He himself has been fantastic.”

Celtic lead the Scottish Premiership by a point but have a game in hand.

There was also more good news for fans on Thursday as Scott McGregor signed a new five-year deal with the club that runs to 2023.

He made his 200th appearance for the Hoops last weekend.

Brown is loved by Celtic fans and they were full of praise for their captain after he reached his 500th appearance.
