Boxing news: Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez targets Wembley fight against Britain’s Callum Smith in 2019

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is eyeing a Wembley showdown with Callum Smith in 2019.

The Mexican superstar, the WBC and WBA middleweight world champion, stepped up to super-middleweight to face Rocky Fielding in New York on Saturday and demolished the Briton inside three rounds.

Alvarez, who also held the WBO light-middleweight title from 2016 to 2017, can now boast being a world champion in three weight divisions having claimed a minor version of the WBA world super-middleweight title with his victory over Fielding.

Now the 28-year-old is eager to fight outside North America for the first time as he bids to become a ‘global superstar’ – and his Golden Boy Promotions team are making plans for a date at Wembley Stadium with Smith.

The Brit holds the superior version of the WBA super-middleweight title, having beaten George Groves to win the World Boxing Super Series in September, and is regarded by many as the best in the division.

Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya said: “Canelo is the biggest name in boxing and we are looking abroad to build him into a global superstar.”

Eric Gomez, president of Golden Boy, added: “We are now very open to going to the UK, probably to fight Callum.”

After stopping Groves in seven rounds in their all-British encounter in September, Liverpudlian Smith outlined his hopes of fighting at Anfield next summer against Gennady Golovkin.

But the lure of facing Canelo, who beat Golovkin in their middleweight rematch in September, in front of a 80,000 capacity crowd at Wembley could prove too strong to resist.

Canelo, a hero in Mexico, is also looking to put on a record-breaking show at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City next year.

Julio Cesar Chavez set a boxing attendance record of 132,247 when he fought at that venue against Greg Haugen in 1993.

De La Hoya added to the Mail: “We want Canelo to break that crowd record.”
